    (Citation Needed) – SYNOPSIS: The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to First Lieutenant (Air Corps) Carroll (Carol) Emory Underwood (ASN: 0-727061), United States Army Air Forces, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy in action against enemy forces while serving as Pilot of a B-17 Bomber assigned of the 429th Bombardment Squadron, 2d Bombardment Group, 15th Air Force, in action on 11 April 1945, in the Mediterranean Theater of Operations. First Lieutenant Underwood’s unquestionable valor in aerial combat is in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflects great credit upon himself and the United States Army Air Forces.
