    Headquarters, U.S. Forces-Pacific, General Orders No. 437 (December 31, 1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Technical Sergeant Glen Eugene Tweed (ASN: 14000516), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Company K, 3d Battalion, 305th Infantry Regiment, 77th Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces at Leyte, Philippine Islands, on 13 December 1944. As a platoon sergeant, Technical Sergeant Tweed was participating in an assault against a strongly defended enemy hill position north of Ormoc, Leyte, Philippine Islands, when the enemy launched a vicious counterattack, delivering devastating mortar and machine gun fire which killed the platoon leader and wounded two key non-commissioned officers. Realizing that the platoon was badly disorganized and in danger of annihilation, Technical Sergeant Tweed unhesitatingly assumed command in the midst of a violent enemy charge, and deployed his men so effectively that they inflicted heavy casualties on the foe and forced him to retire. By the time he had effectively reorganized the platoon in defensive positions, the enemy attacked, the enemy attacked in large numbers, causing heavy casualties which left both of the platoon’s light machine guns unmanned. Sensing the critical nature of the situation, Technical Sergeant Tweed seized one of the machine guns from its mount, and exposing himself with complete disregard for his own safety, fearlessly advanced toward the enemy, firing from his hip. When seven Japanese soldiers charged toward him, he quickly put them down with deadly fire. Suddenly subjected to machine gun fire from enemy emplaced in a bamboo grove, he turned upon them, and courageously moving forward, sprayed the entire grove with withering fire until he had silenced the machine gun and killed its crew. By his heroic action, he enabled the company to advance and capture its objective. Technical Sergeant Tweed was subsequently killed while gallantly engaging the enemy, but through his aggressive spirit and intrepid leadership, he set an example of bravery which was an inspiration to all members of the command. Technical Sergeant Tweed’s extraordinary heroism, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 77th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
