The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Sergeant Anthony Daniel Trumpaitis, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Company K, 3d Battalion, 157th Infantry Regiment, 45th Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces in Italy, in October 1943. During a night attack on strong enemy positions near Faichehio, Italy, the forward movement of two Infantry platoons was halted by fire from tanks. Sergeant Trumpaitis, commanding the leading Infantry squad, was seriously wounded in the back, arms, legs and head, losing the sight of one eye. Despite these severe wounds, he refused to retire for treatment until he had administered first aid to three of his men who had been wounded. He then assisted in carrying the injured to safety and was again wounded by mortar fire. Sergeant Trumpaitis persisted in remaining on the scene of the fighting until his unit was ordered to withdraw, and then was the last man to leave. In doing so, he collapsed and several hours later was picked up by a friendly patrol. Sergeant Trumpaitis’ extraordinary heroism, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 45th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
