(Citation Needed) – SYNOPSIS: The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Staff Sergeant Richard Trapani (ASN: 32641506), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Company F, 2d Battalion, 399th Infantry Regiment, 100th Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces in the vicinity of Reyersviller, France, on 15 March 1945. Serving as a forward observer for his mortar platoon, Staff Sergeant was forward to call in targets for his mortars. When he came under enemy fire, he borrowed grenades from the Company F scouts and destroyed two machine guns before he was himself, killed in action. Staff Sergeant Trapani’s extraordinary heroism, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty at the cost of his life, exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 100th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
