The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to First Lieutenant (Corps of Engineers) Frederick Davis Titterington, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Company A, 25th Armored Engineer Combat Battalion, 6th Armored Division, in action against enemy forces in France. On 11 November 1944, near Min De Sanry, France, when advance attacking elements of a task force with which First Lieutenant Titterington was serving were stopped by blown bridges across a river, he voluntarily led a group of men behind the enemy lines to find a possible crossing. Upon locating a causeway across the river which he believed to be intact, even though under water and known to be wired for demolition, First Lieutenant Titterington took a small group of his men in a half-track out onto it. After proceeding about fifty yards First Lieutenant Titterington dismounted from the half-track under enemy fire and cut the wires leading to demolition charges which the enemy had placed on the first bridge in the causeway. He then fearlessly continued on foot the remaining hundred yards of the causeway, still under enemy fire, testing for demolition charges and mines. He reached the far shore safely determining that the crossing was intact. First Lieutenant Titterington’s conspicuous heroism and courageous devotion to duty reflect great credit upon himself and uphold the highest traditions of the Military Service of the United States.
