The plane was hit by flak over a target in occupied France and was descending rapidly, but Lieutenant Sullivan held it on an even keel enabling crew members to bail out. He and the Engineer-Gunner were killed in the ensuing crash. The personal courage and zealous devotion to duty displayed by Second Lieutenant Sullivan on this occasion have upheld the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, the 9th Air Force, and the United States Army Air Forces.
