    The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting a Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu of a Second Award of the Silver Star to Major (Infantry) Alexander C. Stiller (ASN: 0-1010000), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Headquarters, THIRD U.S. Army, XII Corps, in action against an armed enemy on 22 March 1945, in Germany. Receiving permission from the Commanding General of the leading division, Major Stiller participated in the initial wave of the assault crossing of the Rhine River. By continuously exposing himself to withering enemy fire and through his superb coolness and splendid example the assaulting troops were greatly encouraged and inspired. Upon reaching the eastern bank, he continued the advance with the leading elements until such time as they were firmly established and in no danger of adverse counter-attack. His gallantry and supreme devotion to duty reflect great credit upon himself and uphold the highest traditions of the Military Service of the United States.

    The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Major (Infantry) Alexander Chapman Stiller (ASN: 0-1010000), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving as Aide-de-Camp to the Commanding General, THIRD U.S. Army, in action against enemy forces in Germany. On 27 March 1945, when murderous enemy sniper fire threatened to disorganize a force under his command near Hammelburg, Germany, Major Stiller fearlessly and deliberately exposed himself to this fire in order to rally his men. Through his example of coolness and gallantry, he organized and inspired them to resist the superior enemy force. Although wounded by enemy fire which had previously wounded his gunner and killed his driver, he calmly stood his ground and directed the defense of the position. Major Stiller’s outstanding leadership, his unflinching heroism and devotion to duty exemplify the finest traditions of military service.
