Headquarters, FIRST U.S. Army, General Orders No. 68 (May 4, 1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Captain (Infantry) John Martin Stephens, Jr., United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving as Commanding Officer of Company G, 2d Battalion, 23d Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces in the vicinity of Ondenval, Belgium, from 15 to 19 January 1945. During a bitter five-day assault against firmly emplaced enemy positions, Captain Stephens constantly exposed himself to tremendous enemy fire as he moved on foot abreast of friendly tanks, directing their fire. He remained in advance of the leading elements of his company and inspired his men to greater efforts, resulting in the reduction of three hostile strongpoints and the capture of two important towns. When ammunition of two of his platoons ran low, he loaded two tanks with ammunition. Leading them on foot through fire-swept streets, he fired his pistol at enemy soldiers endeavoring to destroy the tanks with rocket fire. Captain Stephens’ outstanding leadership, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 2d Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
