The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Lieutenant Colonel (Infantry) Fred Alvin Steiner (ASN: 0-119758), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving as Executive Officer, 8th Infantry Regiment, 4th Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces at Normandy, France, on 6 June 1944. As his Regiment was moving forward, Colonel Steiner discovered a strongly fortified position near a regional command post that had not been fully reduced and which was threatening to hold up the advance of the rear elements. Realizing the seriousness of the situation, he immediately organized a force of the available personnel in the immediate vicinity. Despite intense enemy fire, he exposed himself on numerous occasions in leading and directing the attack upon the strong point. After a severe fire fight in which he personally took part, the strong point was reduced. In this attack four enemy field pieces, which were capable of effective use against the beachhead, were destroyed and numerous prisoners were taken. The courageous and superior leadership exhibited by Colonel Steiner reflect great credit upon himself and was in keeping with the highest traditions of the Armed Forces.
