The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Captain (Infantry) John C. Steck, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving as Commanding Officer of Company K, 3d Battalion, 242d Infantry Regiment, 42d Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces while leading an attack against superior enemy forces at Kaltenhaus, France, on 25 January 1945. Owing to heavy losses, Captain Steck’s company was considerably under strength and his thin line was stretched to the breaking point. Realizing the odds against which he and his men were fighting, Captain Steck immediately sized up the situation in the darkness and confusion and commenced the direction of a fierce defensive action. In spite of intense enemy artillery, mortar, automatic and small arms fire, he moved forward to an exposed position where he could more effectively direct the fire of his heavy weapons. Refusing a demand for surrender after he and three of his men were cut off by the Germans, Captain Steck skillfully restored his defensive line and successfully resisted the enemy attack. Captain Steck’s outstanding leadership, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
