The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Private Edward Gale Squires (ASN: 15071448), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Company H, 2d Battalion, 127th Infantry Regiment, 32d Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces on 28 December 1942, during the Papuan Campaign at Buna, New Guinea. On that date, Private Squires, in company with four other enlisted Engineers, volunteered to assist in the repair of a bridge which was vitally needed in connection with an impending attack on strongly fortified Japanese positions in the Buna area. With complete disregard for his personal safety, Private Squires picked up one end of a bridge plank and started across the span in full view of the enemy. Although under heavy fire from three bunkers which commanded the bridge he courageously tried to make the necessary repairs. Private Squires’ extraordinary heroism, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 32d Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
