Headquarters, FIRST U.S. Army, General Orders No. 92 (December 8, 1944)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to First Lieutenant (Infantry) William Frederick Squire (ASN: 0-1290833), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with an Infantry Company of the 47th Infantry Regiment, 9th Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces in France, on 11 July 1944. First Lieutenant Squire observed a German tank creeping along a road from his Command Post near St. Lo, France, attempting to block his company’s route of return from a mission. Securing a rocket launcher, he crept through an opening in a hedge adjoining the road and was fired upon by a machine gun on the hostile tank. He fired an anti-tank rocket at the tank, rendering it immobile and then rushed forward to kill two of the crew attempting to escape. He then killed the rest of the crew by mounting the tank and throwing two hand grenades down the open turret. First Lieutenant Squire’s extraordinary heroism, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 9th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
