    (Citation Needed) – SYNOPSIS: The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Technical Sergeant Joseph John Smyth, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Headquarters Company, 318th Infantry Regiment, 80th Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces near Weilheiden, Germany, on 2 April 1945. During the withdrawal of the 318th Infantry Regiment, Technical Sergeant Smyth volunteered to remain behind to treat and evacuate the wounded. In the process of this self-assigned mission, enemy machine gun fire opened up, threatening to thwart all efforts for rescue of the wounded. Technical Sergeant Smyth walked into the enemy fire, blazing with a Browning Automatic Rifle until he had knocked out the hostile enemy guns. German riflemen engaged him, but he escaped injure and killed 21 and wounded 19, ending the enemy effort and enabling the rescue of his wounded comrades. Technical Sergeant Smyth’s extraordinary heroism, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 80th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
