The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Corporal Preston R. Smith (ASN: 6977340), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Company K, 3d Battalion, 26th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces in the vicinity of Djebel Chemal, in North Africa, on 20 January 1943. Corporal Smith, despite the great hazards involved, voluntarily led a small patrol deep within enemy territory and skillfully observed enemy installations. The completeness and accuracy of his reports were of great assistance to his unit in defeating the enemy. Corporal Smith’s extraordinary heroism, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty, exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
