(Citation Needed) – SYNOPSIS: The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Sergeant Michael J. Smerillo (ASN: 6663412), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Company H, 2d Battalion, 7th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces at Les Aynans, France, on 15 September 1944, in the vicinity of Besancon, France. During action against enemy forces Sergeant Smerillo volunteered to place his machine gun in the open in order to draw enemy fire, thus exposing their positions. Sergeant Smerillo’s extraordinary heroism, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 3d Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
