The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Private First Class Wayne Homer Sinclair (ASN: 37141124), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Company H, 6th Armored Infantry Battalion, 1st Armored Division, in action against enemy forces in Algeria, on or about 8 November 1942. After swimming to shore from his ship, which had been set afire by direct hits from enemy shore batteries, Private Sinclair observed three men helplessly struggling in the water. With complete disregard for his own safety, and in the face of hostile machine gun fire, he obtained a rowboat and pulled it to the three men whom he assisted into it. He then proceeded to the burning ship, removed a wounded officer, and took the four safely to shore. Private First Class Sinclair’s extraordinary heroism, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 1st Armored Division, and the United States Army.
