(Citation Needed) – SYNOPSIS: The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Private Stanley Irving Silverman (ASN: 32014724), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with an Infantry Company of the 60th Infantry Regiment, 9th Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces in Tunisia, in March 1943. Private First Class Silverman, assigned to help clear out land mines, volunteered to help capture an enemy-held hill. Halfway up the hill he was struck in the leg by two machine gun bullets in his leg, Weakened from the loss of blood, he knew he could not perform the task as he had originally planned it. Instead, he approached the machine gun nests in a direct line and, when less than fifty yards away, he stood up and hurled three hand grenades into the enemy gun emplacements. The guns were silenced and the advance continued. Private First Class Silverman’s extraordinary heroism, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
