    The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting a Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu of a Second Award of the Silver Star to First Sergeant [then Staff Sergeant] Julian Richard Sheehy (ASN: 6147553), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Battery C, 7th Field Artillery Battalion, 1st Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in North Africa and Sicily, during the period from March through July 1943 When an enemy shell ignited a gun pit containing more than a hundred rounds of 105-mm. ammunition, First Sergeant Sheehy entered the gun pit and extinguished the flames. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.

Exposing himself to heavy enemy machine gun and artillery fire, Sergeant Sheehy skillfully directed the displacement of his piece to a position allowing the complete destruction of an enemy battery. His tactical ability and leadership enabled him to complete a difficult maneuver under heavy fire without the loss of men or equipment. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
