The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Infantry) Kermit H. Selvig (ASN: 0-1296270), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Headquarters Company, 1st Battalion, 23d Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 12 and 13 October 1951 in the vicinity of Satae-ri, Korea. On these dates Captain Selvig, as Battalion S3, attached to a unit which had the mission of attacking and securing a well-fortified enemy-held hill. Captain Selvig observed that the enemy was directing intense small arms and mortar fire on the attacking forces, hindering the progress of their advance. Without hesitating he left his position of comparative safety and moved over the hazardous terrain to personally contact and direct the commanders of friendly units in their advance. By his aggressive leadership on this occasion Captain Selvig was highly responsible for the success of the mission. The gallantry in action displayed by Captain Selvig reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
