Headquarters, SEVENTH U.S. Army, General Orders No. 300 (July 7, 1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Kermit H. Selvig (ASN: 0-1296270), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Company C, 1st Battalion, 143d Infantry Regiment, 36th Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces in the vicinity of Dorrenbach, Germany, on 22 March 1945. When his platoon was pinned down by heavy machine gun, rifle and nebelwerfer fire from several well-camouflaged strongpoints in the Siegfried Line, First Lieutenant Selvig began crawling alone toward one of the pillboxes. Bravely exposing himself to the hostile fire, he hurled first a fragmentation grenade and then a phosphorous grenade into the aperture of the fortification. Then, signaling for his platoon to follow him, he rushed the strongpoint and captured five Germans. Upon locating a second pillbox, he again crawled forward and captured five Germans. Upon locating a second pillbox, he again crawled forward and moved to within ten yards of the position, firing his carbine as he advanced. Rushing inside, he captured eleven German officers. With these two strongpoints cleared, he led his platoon forward in a bold and aggressive action that cleared five more pillboxes, captured an enemy aid station and took ninety German prisoners. First Lieutenant Selvig’s outstanding leadership, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 36th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
