The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Captain (Infantry) Reed Leon Seely (ASN: 0-355105), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Company F, 2d Battalion, 328th Infantry Regiment, 26th Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces in Germany. On 17 February 1945, during fierce house-to-house fighting in Saarlouis-Roden, Germany, Captain Seely, fearlessly braving intense hostile automatic weapons and rocket fire, moved along through a heavily mined area in order to make a personal reconnaissance. He then led his company against bitterly defended enemy fortified positions, moving from man to man and fearlessly exposing himself to the withering enemy fire in order to direct the action of his troops. Inspired by this heroic leadership, his men moved forward and reduced the enemy positions, allowing the rest of the battalion to advance and secure its objective. Although Captain Seely was killed the following day by an enemy mine, his dauntless courage and supreme devotion to duty will live on as an inspiration to his men.
