The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Walter William Scott (ASN: 0-514482), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Company A, 1st Battalion, 350th Infantry Regiment, 88th Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces in Italy, on 30 September 1944. After First Lieutenant Scott’s company had relieved two companies on Mount Battaglia, the enemy launched a vicious counterattack to regain this strategic height. In the face of intense artillery, mortar, and small arms fire, First Lieutenant Scott circulated among his men, shouting words of encouragement, issuing orders and pointing out targets. He killed four of the enemy with his pistol. Observing that the advancing enemy threatened to overrun his positions, First Lieutenant Scott picked up a rifle from a dead soldier, called for his men to follow him and advanced toward the enemy. In the fierce battle that ensued First Lieutenant Scott killed two more enemy soldiers, while his men killed and wounded many others. The enemy troops were so severely mauled that they turned and fled to their own lines. The determined courage, calmness under fire and intrepid leadership displayed by First Lieutenant Scott were an inspiration to all who witnessed his heroic performance. His extraordinary heroism, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 88th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
