Headquarters, FIFTH U.S. Army, General Orders No. 113 (July 5, 1944)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Staff Sergeant Harold Lawrence Schorg (ASN: 17010959), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Company I, 3d Battalion, 168th Infantry Regiment, 34th Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces in the vicinity of Cisterna di Littoria, Italy, from 23 to 25 April 1944. During a night attack on enemy positions, Sergeant Schorg led his platoon through an enemy mine field. While crossing the field he accidentally detonated three anti-personnel mines and received numerous burns on his face and both hands, and a fragment in his leg. In spite of his painful wounds, Sergeant Schorg continued the attack and led his platoon to the company objective. Two days later, at dawn, the enemy attacked the newly won positions. In addition to his automatic rifle, Sergeant Schorg had procured a German machine gun and an Italian automatic rifle during the earlier attack. With deadly accuracy he fired his automatic rifle at the advancing enemy, inflicting heavy casualties. After expending all ammunition for his three weapons, Sergeant Schorg rushed across open terrain to assist a fellow soldier whose automatic rifle had jammed. While being subjected to intense enemy fire, he repaired the weapon and procured ammunition. Again he crossed open terrain to his platoon leader’s position, and assisted in directing mortar fire on the advancing enemy. The counterattack was completely broken, but he was seriously wounded by enemy artillery fire while administering first aid to men in his squad. Staff Sergeant Schorg’s extraordinary heroism, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
