The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Private First Class Stanley John Schneider (ASN: 36257345), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Company H, 2d Battalion, 151st Infantry Regiment, in action against enemy forces in the Southwest Pacific Area on 4 April 1945. During military operations which culminated in the clearing of Japanese forces from Caballo Island, Manila Bay, Philippine Islands, Company H, a heavy weapons unit of the 151st Infantry Regiment, was supporting rifle troops when the enemy made a fanatical attack on the perimeter of the Battalion Command Post. Private Schneider, a machine gunner who was deployed on a well protected flank of the perimeter, saw the enemy advancing up a draw and without regard for his own welfare, left the comparative safety of his location and moved his machine gun to an exposed position in order to bring direct fire upon the advancing enemy. Although his two assistants were wounded and had to be evacuated for medical treatment, Private Schneider remained at his post, laying down a murderous barrage of devastating fire upon the advancing enemy until he was overrun by sheer weight of numbers and mortally wounded. When our troops regained the position, thirty enemy dead and many more wounded lay in front of the machine gun. Through his indomitable fighting spirit and outstanding courage in the face of overwhelming odds, Private Schneider made a distinct contribution to the successful repulsion of a serious threat upon the Battalion Command Post and his splendid performance of duty was in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service.
