Headquarters, European Theater of Operations, U.S. Army, General Orders No. 61 (September 10, 1943)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Staff Sergeant Roy Louis Schellin (ASN: 37300475), United States Army Air Forces, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving as Gunner of a B-17 Heavy Bomber in the 418th Bombardment Squadron, 100th Bombardment Group (H), EIGHTH Air Force, while participating in a bombing mission on 14 July 1943, against enemy targets in the European Theater of Operations. The aircraft in which Sergeant Schellin was serving was heavily hit by flak and machine gun fire. His right hand was drilled through and his leg was punctured in many places. The glass in the right side of the turret had blown out, exposing him to extreme cold. His heated suit was punctured in several places and burned him continually. Despite the severe pain from his wounds and with complete disregard for his personal safety, Sergeant Schellin heroically continued to fire his gun with only one arm and for three-quarters of an hour and succeeded in destroying two enemy airplanes. The extraordinary heroism, skill, and devotion to duty displayed by Sergeant Schellin on this occasion contributed materially to the safe return of the aircraft and crew. His personal courage and zealous devotion to duty have upheld the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, the 8th Air Force, and the United States Army Air Forces.
