The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Second Lieutenant (Infantry) Frederick A. Schaefer (ASN: 0-434728), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with an Infantry Company of the 27th Infantry Regiment, 25th Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces on 12 January 1943, at Guadalcanal, Solomon Islands. In action under heavy machine gun fire at close range, Second Lieutenant Schaefer displayed outstanding leadership and bravery. Though he was wounded twice, he continued to lead his platoon in the assault on enemy positions. As a result the enemy positions were overcome and the battalion was greatly aided in reaching its objective. Second Lieutenant Schaeffer’s extraordinary heroism, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
