Headquarters, NINTH U.S. Army, General Orders No. 136 (May 2, 1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Staff Sergeant Frederick Olive Sawyer (ASN: 31400508), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with an Infantry Company of the 120th Infantry Regiment, 30th Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces in Belgium, on 18 January 1945. During an attack, Staff Sergeant Sawyer and a comrade braved intense enemy machine gun fire to knock out an enemy tank with their bazookas. Later, Staff Sergeant Sawyer and his squad were confronted by another tank only 15 yards from them. Realizing that immediate diversionary action was necessary if his men were to escape its deadly fire, Staff Sergeant Sawyer stood in full view of the enemy and fired round after round from his rifle at the tank until he was killed by enemy machine gun fire. By his extra ordinary courage, his entire squad escaped to cover and later forced the tank to withdraw. Staff Sergeant Sawyer’s extraordinary heroism, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty at the cost of his life, exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 30th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
