(Citation Needed) – SYNOPSIS: The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Private Gregory Sarmanian (ASN: 11080250), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Troop E, 2d Squadron, 18th Cavalry Reconnaissance Squadron (Mechanized) (Separate), in action against enemy forces near Poteau, Belgium, on 18 December, 1944. During the German Tank Assault and under intense enemy fire and without regard for his own severe wounds from enemy bullet and mortar fire, Private Sarmanian saved the lives of 7 wounded men by taking them out of harms way to behind his own lines. He rendered first aid to wounded troops in the midst of intense fire from enemy 120-mm. mortar, high velocity self-propelled guns, bazooka, three heavy machine guns and countless small arms, despite receiving injuries to his head, face and left arm. When one of the bazooka rounds nearly severed a fellow soldier’s leg, Private Sarmanian, again disregarding his own safety and injuries, moved the wounded comrade to a shell hole and performed a field amputation on the man’s leg. Private Sarmanian’s extraordinary heroism, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
