    Headquarters, U.S. Forces-Pacific, General Orders No. 68 (July 23, 1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Private First Class Allan Deveney Sandlain (ASN: 37358986), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Company C, 1st Battalion, 148th Infantry Regiment, 37th Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces at Luzon, Philippine Islands, on 20 April 1945. The third platoon of Company C, 148th Infantry Regiment, was given the mission of capturing a strongly-defended enemy-held hill. The platoon reached the crest of the hill when the entire area was suddenly swept by enemy rifle and machine gun fire from positions along the reverse slope. Disregarding this intense fire, Private First Class Sandlain, an automatic rifleman, courageously continued to move forward. Crawling to within twenty yards of an enemy gun emplacement, he suddenly rose to his feet and directed an accurate stream of fire at the position. While engaged in the fierce fire fight, he was struck in the chest by an enemy bullet and knocked to the ground. Ignoring the severe pain and resolved in his heroic determination to destroy the enemy, he continued his fire and killed three Japanese before he was stuck again and fell fatally wounded. Private First Class Sandlain’s gallant determination and extraordinary heroism inspired his comrades to continue the attack with renewed vigor until the enemy was completely destroyed. His extraordinary heroism, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty at the cost of his life, exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 37th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
