The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Private First Class Dominick James Salvemini (ASN: 32190130), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with the Medical Detachment of the 121st Infantry Regiment, 8th Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces southeast of Gerne, France, on 14 July 1944. At about 1600, on 14 July 1944, approximately 800 yards southeast of Gerne, France, the 121st Infantry Regiment was forced to withdraw a short distance due to intense enemy mortar and machine gun fire. The terrain was heavily lined with hedgerows. Private First Class Salvemini, Medical Aidman attached to Company ** refused to withdraw from the company and insisted on remaining under terrific enemy fire to continue rendering first aid to the wounded. Private First Class Salvemini, with utter disregard for his own personal safety, continued doing his job until killed by enemy fire. Private First Class Salvemini’s extraordinary heroism, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty at the cost of his life, exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 8th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
