When his company came under heavy enemy fire during the landing on Sicily, Private Salley crawled to within 30 yards of a strong machine gun emplacement and destroyed it with a hand grenade. Later he saw one of his comrades fall, dazed by a shell from an enemy tank. In the face of machine gun fire, he moved out to his comrade’s side and secured his rifle with a grenade launcher attached. He fire a grenade which cause the damaged tank to withdraw. His squad then attacked a German platoon and wiped it out. Private Salley continued throughout the entire battle to take every chance imaginable, and his bravery was a great inspiration to all of his comrades. Private Salley’s extraordinary heroism, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 45th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
