Headquarters, FIRST U.S. Army, General Orders No. 50 (March 28, 1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Captain (Infantry) William E. Russell (ASN: 0-1291174), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Company K, 3d Battalion, 18th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces in Germany, on 18 and 19 October 1944. When a strong enemy assault partially overran one of his squads, Captain Russell made his way through heavy fire and moved from man to man encouraging and directing them in repelling the enemy assault. Returning to his command post, he observed several wounded men lying in an exposed position. Moving through devastating fire, he made three trips across the fire-swept ground and evacuated the wounded soldiers. On the following day, the enemy again attacked in force. Once more braving withering fire, Captain Russell made his way to an isolated pillbox from which he directed intense fire, disorganizing the hostile assault. Captain Russell’s outstanding leadership, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 1st Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
