(Citation Needed) – SYNOPSIS: The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Private First Class Wilmer H. Rummel, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Company C, 1st Battalion, 163d Infantry Regiment, 41st Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces near Sanananda, New Guinea, on 19 January 1943, during the Papuan Campaign at Sanananda, New Guinea. Private First Class Rummel aided his platoon sergeant in capturing an enemy pillbox near Sanananda, then then single-handedly knocked out a second pillbox with grenades. He and his companion, advancing under heavy crossfire from rifles and sub-machine guns, then managed to wipe out four more pillboxes, and then held the captured ground until reinforcements arrived. Private First Class Rummel’s extraordinary heroism, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 41st Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
