The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Second Lieutenant (Infantry) Clarence Towner Ruby, Sr. (ASN: 0-1307311), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Company M, 3d Battalion, 26th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces at Normandy, France, on 9 June 1944. On that date, an infantry attack, supported by tanks, overran Lieutenant Ruby’s platoon. Lieutenant Ruby opened up on the enemy infantry with his rifle, forcing them to withdraw. The enemy retaliated by throwing grenades into his position and wounding him. Realizing the gravity of the situation, Lieutenant Ruby, although painfully wounded, proceeded through enemy-held ground toward his squad positions in an attempt to reorganize them. He was captured but later escaped and returned to his platoon post. Despite his painful wound, he was still attempting to organize his platoon when found by his battalion commander who ordered him to the battalion aid station. The personal bravery, daring and leadership displayed by Lieutenant Ruby reflect great credit upon himself and are in keeping with the highest traditions of the Armed Forces of the United States.
