Headquarters, FIRST U.S. Army, General Orders No. 19 (May 13, 1944)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Corporal Michael Ros (ASN: 16002552), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Company M, 3d Battalion, 60th Infantry Regiment, 9th Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces in North Africa, on 28 March 1943. In action on the night of 28 March 1943, west of Maknassy, Tunisia, when the Infantry heavy machinegun platoon in which he was a squad leader suffered numerous casualties from enemy artillery, mortar, and small arms fire, Corporal Ros held his ground, began firing, and killed the German officer leading the attack. Then, since no American officer was present, he ranged up and down the platoon front, reorganized the platoon, counterattacked, and regained the former position. At daybreak, he organized and led a patrol that captured eight Germans. Corporal Ros’ extraordinary heroism, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
