Headquarters, U.S. Army Forces in the Far East, General Orders No. 16 (1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Private Frank Benjamin Robinson, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Company I, 3d Battalion, 19th Infantry Regiment, 24th Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces during landing operations on Red Beach, Leyte, Philippine Islands, on 20 October 1944. Landing on the left flank of the battalion, Company I was pinned down by an enemy strongpoint consisting of a tank ditch 500 yards inland from the beach. From this ditch the enemy poured small arms, machine gun, and 75-mm. artillery fire on them from prepared positions dug into and around the ditch. Several pillboxes, emplaced to defend the enemy artillery pieces, continued to hold up the advance of Company I. Undeterred, Private Robinson crawled forward until he reached the rear of one of the pillboxes. He then rose up and dropped three grenades into the position, and then reached through the port and pulled the machine gun out of the box. Grabbing a flamethrower operator, he moved ahead two hundred yards and attacked another pillbox. When his flamethrower failed to ignite, he lighted it by hand with a bunch of discarded Japanese newspapers that he set afire, then threw in front of the pillbox. The flamethrower operator then burned out the second pillbox. To destroy a third pillbox, Private Robinson repeatedly exposed himself to its fire to allow supporting tanks to locate it and subsequently destroy it. Private Robinson’s extraordinary heroism, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
