Rehak, Jr. (ASN: 20646676), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Company E, 2d Battalion, 127th Infantry Regiment, 32d Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces on 20 December 1942, during the Papuan Campaign at Buna, New Guinea. During an attack near Buna, Staff Sergeant Rehak advanced ahead of his platoon through heavy enemy machine gun and sniper fire in an attempt to destroy an enemy machine gun emplacement. He was killed a short distance from his objective, but his example inspired his command to make a determined and successful assault on a well-entrenched enemy emplacement. Staff Sergeant Rehak’s extraordinary heroism, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty at the cost of his life, exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 32d Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
