The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Private John R. Reardon (ASN: 31049881), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with an Infantry Company of the 503d Parachute Infantry Regiment (Separate), in action against enemy forces at Noemfoor Island, Dutch New Guinea, on 12 August 1944. Private Reardon’s platoon became the target of very heavy sniper fire both from the trees and dug-in ground positions. The enemy located a gap of about 30 yards and broke into the American lines. The defense of the area immediately became seriously endangered, and the enemy, aware of their advantage, increased their rate of fire on the gap. Private Reardon volunteered to enter the gap and moved into it under heavy enemy fire and without fire support. When he saw that his mission could not be accomplished in time from any other position, he dashed to a conspicuous position under heavy sniper fire. In an upright position, entirely exposed to the enemy, he advanced, pouring a heavy volume of fire from his carbine into the strongest of the enemy positions for fifteen minutes. He was shot while firing, with enemy bullets hitting him in his left hand and the left arm, shattering it. Despite his pain he continued his firing advance until the enemy became unnerved and retreated from the gap in confusion. His gallant actions saved the position and the lives of his comrades, and enabled our troops to maneuver and reinforce the gap. Private Reardon’s extraordinary heroism, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
