The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to First Lieutenant (Infantry) William Leroy Pryor (ASN: 0-1293474), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with an Infantry Company of the 28th Infantry Regiment, 8th Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces near La Barville, France, on 10 July 1944. When an entire company was completely surrounded by the enemy, First Lieutenant Pryor elected to remain with his weapons platoon and cover the withdrawal of the remainder of the company. Before a counterattack could be organized and thrown against the enemy, First Lieutenant Pryor and his platoon were stormed while defending their position. He directed a withdrawal of his platoon so successfully that every man reached safety while he alone, courageously stood his ground, firing at the enemy as they closed in from three sides. During the final rush by the enemy, First Lieutenant Pryor was last seen when, apparently hit by enemy fire, he staggered and fell. His extraordinary heroism, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 8th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
