(Citation Needed) – SYNOPSIS: The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Private First Class Dallis Dell Prather (ASN: 36363664), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Company G, 2d Battalion, 141st Infantry Regiment, 36th Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces at San Pietro, Italy, on 15 December 1943. On that date, two enemy machine guns caught his platoon in a crossfire and the men couldn’t move. German mortars were steadily killing and wounding the men one by one where they lay. Private First Class Prather got up, exposed himself deliberately to the enemy fire and then ran as rapidly as possible in the opposite direction. The two enemy machine gunners saw him, shifted their fire and closed the twin blades of their deadly scissors on his racing, dodging figure. Before they killed him with their fire, the platoon successfully escaped from their deadly position. Private First Class Prather’s extraordinary heroism, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty at the cost of his life, exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
