The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Staff Sergeant Harry Pozniak (ASN: 35015652), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Company M, 3d Battalion, 148th Infantry Regiment, 37th Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces, in action in Manila, Luzon, Philippine Islands, on 7 February 1945. During the advance near Paco Railroad Station, three comrades of Staff Sergeant Pozniak were wounded in a hail of heavy machine gun, mortar, and rifle fire, and lay in an exposed area. He rushed into the fire-swept zone three times, each time evacuating one of the wounded men. Then he voluntarily ran 150 yards under heavy enemy fire and, near exhaustion, brought up litters on which to remove the casualties to the aid station. By his extraordinary heroism in aiding three comrades at the risk of his own life, Staff Sergeant Pozniak performed a service in keeping with the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States, and reflected great credit upon himself, the 37th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
