The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Private First Class Aubrey Lee Powers (ASN: 13018680), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with an Infantry Company of the 27th Infantry Regiment, 25th Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces on 12 January 1943, at Guadalcanal, in the Solomon Islands. When a platoon of Infantry was halted by enemy machine gun fire, Private Powers, serving as a scout, located one enemy position and worked his way near enough to account for the entire machine gun crew of five, single-handed. Private Powers then proceeded toward a second enemy machine gun position. In this attempt to eliminate further enemy resistance, Private Powers received three wounds and cold not continue on. However, in this condition, he directed a rifle squad to the enemy position, thereby aiding in its elimination. Private First Class Powers’ extraordinary heroism, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
