Headquarters, U.S. Army Forces in the South Pacific Area, General Orders No. 96 (April 21, 1943)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Private George C. Poshefko (ASN: 0-6885987), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with an Infantry Company of the 27th Infantry Regiment, 25th Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces on 10 January 1943, at Guadalcanal, in the Solomon Islands. During an attack on an enemy-occupied hill, Private Poshefko, his squad leader, and one other member of the squad became separated from their platoon. While this group remained under cover in a position of comparative safety, Private Poshefko, having determined the location of the enemy machine gun position which was holding up the advance of his platoon, decided to proceed toward it in an attempt to eliminate the resistance by the use of hand grenades. With a shout of “Let’s go get them,” he left the position, although warned by his squad leader of the danger involved. He was hit and mortally wounded while working himself toward the enemy. His bravery was an inspiration to the men of his company. Private Poshefko’s extraordinary heroism, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty at the cost of his life, exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 25th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
