(Citation Needed) – SYNOPSIS: The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Second Lieutenant (Field Artillery) John J. Pollarine (ASN: 0-1176767), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving as a Forward Observer with the 110th Field Artillery Battalion, 29th Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces in France, on 21 June 1944. Second Lieutenant Pollarine attached himself to a patrol that was reconnoitering on the 115th Infantry Regiment’s front in order to determine how to adjust artillery fire. As the patrol advanced, he called back orders to his battalion and neutralized enemy positions along the way. He left the patrol to proceed alone, crouching low as he passed through the enemy hedgerows to within a hundred yards of a fortified German position he sought to destroy and was killed by enemy automatic weapons fire. Second Lieutenant Pollarine’s extraordinary heroism, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty at the cost of his life, exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 29th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
