(Citation Needed) – SYNOPSIS: The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Sergeant Henry Crawford Pody (ASN: 34398102), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with an Infantry Company of the 182d Infantry Regiment, 23d Infantry Division (Americal), in action against enemy forces at Bougainville, British Solomon Islands, on 10 and 11 March 1944. Sergeant Pody and his comrades advanced to within ten yards of an enemy pillbox, and destroyed the fortification. Upon coming under fire from other Japanese emplacements, Sergeant Pody remained behind to withstand the enemy until his men reached safety, and was mortally wounded while covering his men’s withdrawal. Sergeant Pody’s extraordinary heroism, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty at the cost of his life, exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
