First Lieutenant Pleam continually exposed himself on three sides while successfully directing his platoon in repelling the enemy attack. Then, when the enemy penetrated their perimeter, he led four men across 600 yards of open terrain, swept by withering enemy fire, to a position from which he killed two enemy soldiers, took five prisoners and forced the remainder to retreat in disorder. First Lieutenant Pleam’s extraordinary heroism, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
