Headquarters, THIRD U.S. Army, General Orders No. 274 (October 2, 1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Technician Fifth Grade Leslie R. Perry (ASN: 32587912), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Headquarters and Service Troop, 94th Cavalry Reconnaissance Squadron, 14th Armored Division, in action against enemy forces near Gottsfeld, Germany, on 15 April 1945. The convoy of which Corporal Perry was a member was ambushed in the town of Gottsfeld by enemy tanks and infantry. Although warned to seek cover, this gallant soldier elected to man the machine gun mounted on his vehicle to protect the withdrawal of his comrades. Seriously wounded by withering hostile fire, he courageously continued to operate his weapon with devastating effect until he was killed by fire from an enemy tank. Technician Fifth Grade Perry’s extraordinary heroism, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty at the cost of his life, exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 4th Armored Division, and the United States Army.
