The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Private First Class Stanley E. Perkins (ASN: 20505294), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Company E, 2d Battalion, 148th Infantry Regiment, 37th Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces in Manila, Luzon, Philippine Islands, on 13 February 1945. When the rifle platoon of which he was a member was held up by fire from an enemy machine gun in a concealed pillbox, Private First Class Perkins volunteered to move forward alone and locate the emplacement. Advancing by short rushes and firing his automatic rifle from the hip, he drew fire from the enemy gun. Continuing the attack, he stormed the pillbox single-handed, killing the four enemy gunners, putting the gun out of action, and permitting the platoon to continue its advance. Later in this action, he was killed by enemy fire. Private First Class Perkins displayed indomitable fighting spirit and outstanding heroism in the face of the enemy. Private First Class Perkins’ extraordinary heroism, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty at the cost of his life, exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 37th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
