The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Staff Sergeant Anthony C. Pecar, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Company G, 2d Battalion, 7th Infantry Regiment, in action against enemy forces on 8 April 1945, near Munnerstadt, Germany. Plunging through a hail of bullets, Sergeant Pecar killed an enemy machine pistol operator at 15 yards ranger with tommy gun fire. As he continued forward, two other machine pistol operators, 30 yards away, opened fire on him. His fire killed the two Germans and then forced a nearby rifleman to surrender. As he led the way deeper into the enemy position, a machine gun suddenly opened fire, pinning down his men. While bullets smashed into trees inches from him, Sergeant Pecar crawled forward to a point less than 40 yards from the emplacement and hurled a hand grenade. He then charged firing from the hip and killed the two man crew. Staff Sergeant Pecar’s extraordinary heroism, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
