Headquarters, FIRST U.S. Army, General Orders No. 37 (July 21, 1944)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Captain (Infantry) James Peter Panas (ASN: 0-454558), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Company A, 81st Chemical Mortar Battalion (Motorized), Chemical Warfare Service, in action against enemy forces at Normandy, France, on 6 June 1944. With the commanding officer of his company wounded and helpless in the water, Captain Panas rescued him from the beach under heavy enemy fire. Then taking personal command of the company, he led the men across the beach, swept by enemy fire, and through a mine field to a position where their mortars could be set up and fired. Captain Panas’ extraordinary heroism, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the Chemical Warfare Service, and the United States Army.
