The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Private First Class Harold E. Palmer, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Company C, 1st Battalion, 141st Infantry Regiment, 36th Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces in the vicinity of Cairo, Italy, on 11 February 1944. During a strong enemy counterattack against the Infantry’s position, Private Palmer operated a machine gun alone on the left flank, although under intense enemy mortar and artillery fire. He kept his gun operating until an enemy grenade tossed into his emplacement destroyed the weapon. Refusing to withdraw, he fought off the advancing enemy with rifle fire and hand grenades, holding the position alone until reinforcements arrived. Then he and another soldier worked their way forward over exposed terrain to a forward machine gun position which had been knocked out of action. As they put the gun into action, his comrade was killed by increasing enemy fire. The enemy continued furious attempts to close in but Private First Class Palmer fired on them at close range, inflicting numerous casualties. Private First Class Palmer’s extraordinary heroism, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
